About CHeCR
We use a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise to improve healthcare delivery, healthcare policy, and the health and wellbeing of people in the healthcare system and living in the community.
We use our methodological and statistical expertise in existing dataset and linked dataset analysis to undertake epidemiological studies and studies to explore variation in healthcare and treatment outcomes, patient pathways, and long-term outcomes for trials. We have international expertise in evidence synthesis and have led methodological guideline development for meta-ethnography and qualitative evidence synthesis.
Our intervention development expertise has led to the development of international guidance on intervention development. Our implementation science expertise provides robust research evidence of which strategies work to facilitate implementation of evidence-based healthcare in a safe and effective way, reaching the intended target audience and maintaining the outcomes demonstrated in controlled trials. CHeCR was formerly part of the Chief Scientist Office Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit. For over 25 years we continued to grow a research agenda under our NMAHP-RU title. See a selection of this archived activity.
Through our funded research we address a wide range of issues, including:
- Developing and testing interventions to improve healthcare and community wellbeing – Developing and evaluating innovative social and behavioural interventions that are important to our stakeholders, provide evidence of effectiveness, inform practice and thereby improve patient outcomes.
 - Reducing health inequalities – Investigating and developing interventions that aim to reduce the disparities caused by health inequalities.
 - Addressing long term conditions – Undertaking research to improve outcomes for people living with a wide range of long term conditions.
 - Synthesising evidence to guide policy and practice – We conduct systematic reviews of existing research and develop methodological innovations for producing a range of evidence synthesis methods.
 - Developing digital health and innovation – Investigating technology’s role in transforming healthcare delivery.

Our impact
Our research informs evidence-based policies, enhances clinical practice, and fosters partnerships that translate knowledge into action. Through collaboration with the NHS, government agencies, charities, and industry, we ensure that our work leads to meaningful improvements for healthcare systems and communities.
Get involved
We welcome and value partnerships with members of the public, patients, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community organisations. Whether you’re looking to help us shape our research agenda, collaborate on a research project, participate in a study, or explore funding opportunities, we invite you to connect with us.
Early Career Researchers
CHeCR has a thriving community of doctoral students and early career researchers. We are proud of our track record of successful PhD completion and support in launching productive research careers of many people who have studied with us. Doctoral and post-doctoral research opportunities are advertised via our Linked-In page as they are available.
