Creating hope through action
World Suicide Prevention Day aims to start the conversation about suicide, raise awareness of the support available and show that recovery is possible.
In the UK, men are three times as likely to die by suicide than women. While there has been a reduction in the number of people completing suicide over the last ten years, the numbers are still worryingly high.
Resources and support
There is a range of support options available, both within the University and through external sources.
The Samaritans
The Samaritans offer a range of support online, over the phone and via email. There is also a self-help app where you can record your mood daily, look for patterns in how you are feeling and enable you to make your personal safety plan and store images of things that give you hope. You will also find information on a range of techniques to reduce stress and help you to focus.
Contact them via their free phone on 116 123 or via email at jo@samaritans.org (expect a response within 24 hours).
Employee Assistance Programme
We also have a range of internal support available within the Employee Assistance Programme which offers a free 24-hour-a-day confidential helpline which can provide support and help. You can also gain access to up to six counselling sessions.
