Growth and research excellence

Since his appointment in 2010, Professor McCormac has led a period of significant institutional growth. University turnover has increased from £100 million to almost £180 million, while the student population has grown by 25% to more than 17,800.

Over the same period, Stirling’s research strength and international reputation have been significantly enhanced. In REF 2021, more than 80 percent of the University’s research was judged to be world leading or internationally excellent – a level of excellence further recognised through two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education: in 2014 for social marketing research and in 2019 for aquaculture.

Transforming the student experience

A major programme of investment in the University’s estate and campus has been delivered under Professor McCormac’s leadership, focused on enhancing the student experience and supporting academic excellence. Key developments include a £40 million programme of new student residences, the £23 million Campus Central development – creating new study, social and commercial spaces – and a £20 million redevelopment of the University’s sports facilities.

Global and civic impact

Internationalisation has been a defining feature of Professor McCormac’s tenure. This includes the establishment of a joint venture with INTO University Partnerships and the significant expansion of transnational education across Asia and the Middle East. Overseas students now account for around a third of the University’s student population. Professor McCormac has also strengthened the University’s civic and economic contribution, with Stirling playing a key role in securing the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal.

Sector leadership

Beyond the University of Stirling, Professor McCormac has been a highly influential national voice for higher education. As Convenor of Universities Scotland, he helped guide the sector through the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, and most recently served as International Lead for Universities UK.
