Each year, over 700 young people, known as Robertson scholars, are supported in a broad range of subjects across Scotland’s universities.

Since 1992, the programme has supported over 1,000 young people to overcome financial and social barriers to gain the university education and career they aspire to.

The Robertson Trust Scholarship has been designed to support prospective students who have the drive and potential to go to university, but not necessarily the money to do so.

There are two Robertson Trust Packages in partnership with the University of Stirling available to apply for:

  • Young Student Support (16-25 year olds);
  • Mature Student Support (26-45 year olds).

Eligibility and availability

Students must be a resident in Scotland for at least 1 year at the time of application, and have made an application to a university in Scotland. As a Scotland-wide funder, The Robertson Trust provides support to students at universities in Scotland.

Students that have already obtained a degree cannot be considered.

Candidates must be eligible for bursary support (Independent Student Bursary, etc.) and tuition fees as a minimum requirement through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland. The Robertson Trust's financial support is intended to complement other sources of statutory support and not replace it.

Students must also fulfil one or more of these criteria:

  • have experience of deep poverty or very low income;
  • have experienced life events which could make going to university less likely such as experiencing homelessness, substance misuse, domestic violence, whether personally or growing up;
  • are formally or informally care-experienced (this can mean having lived in residential care, having lived with a foster family, having experienced kinship care with a member of your family, etc.);
  • have or have had unpaid caring responsibilities for a close friend, family member, or guardian (such as being a young carer);
  • are estranged from their family;
  • are from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups;
  • have a disability or long-term health condition;
  • are from the Gypsy, Roma, and/or Traveller Communities.

For further information on eligibility criteria for each support package visit The Robertson Trust Scholarship website.

Nominations must be submitted by the university and not by the applicant. Find out how to apply below.
