Supportive teaching at Stirling

The teaching has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my course. Lecturers are not only experts in their fields but also genuinely supportive and open to discussion. I appreciated how seminars often encouraged debate and critical thinking rather than passive learning.

The opportunity to work on independent research, especially my dissertation, has been a standout experience. I’ve been able to explore topics I’m passionate about like digital propaganda, social media networks, and media trust. I was also able to apply advanced analytical methods and critical theory. The flexibility in project topics really allowed me to shape the course around my interests.

Great collaboration opportunities

Being able to experience collaborative work with other institutions has given me a real-world insight into working in a corporate setting and cohesively working within a large team across in various locations. We had the opportunity to collaborate with other students in Dallas, Texas.

Enjoying student life at Stirling

Aside from my course, I really enjoyed the wider student life at Stirling. I didn’t live on campus, but staying in the city centre gave me the best of both worlds - easy access to both university and local life. It helped me feel more connected to Stirling as a whole, beyond just the academic side.

I also took part in various student events and made use of the on-campus facilities like the gym and the beautiful lochside walks, which were great for unwinding. While I wasn’t a formal member of any clubs or societies, I did attend a few one-off events and workshops run by them, which were a great way to meet people and try new things outside my academic bubble.

Balancing part-time work alongside my studies also gave me structure and helped me stay socially and mentally active. Overall, the supportive campus environment and the opportunity to mix with students from different backgrounds made my time at Stirling really fulfilling.

Prepared for real-world challenges

My degree at the University of Stirling has had a significant influence on my career direction. It’s helped me build both the theoretical understanding and practical skills I need to work in areas like digital research, media analysis, and policy. The focus on critical thinking, data analysis, and communication has been especially valuable, as these are skills that translate across many sectors.
Stirling prepared me well for real-world challenges by encouraging independent research and self-direction. For example, managing my dissertation taught me how to approach complex problems, work to tight deadlines, and stay resilient through setbacks.

The academic staff were also very supportive in helping us understand how our work could apply beyond university, whether through digital methods, research presentations, or engaging with contemporary global issues. I feel much more confident stepping into a professional environment because of the depth and flexibility of my training at Stirling.

One piece of advice for future postgraduate students

As a postgraduate, it’s easy to fall into a routine and experience the more isolating aspects of university life. That’s why putting yourself out there and deliberately making an effort with fellow students is truly important. These people are going through the same things as you, so network and branch out socially!

Living in the centre of Stirling, as well as having a job, allowed me to compartmentalise between university work and social life. It’s important to be able to separate the two and not get too overwhelmed by the workload you may have at times. So join societies, get outside, don’t hesitate to say yes to things!
