Varied choice of modules
The MSc Applied Social Research offered modules that allowed me to develop and hone the research skills I had gained during my undergraduate social sciences degree. A lot of the course focused on the practical applications of research with modules concentrated on qualitative and quantitative methods as well as writing research proposals. There were also optional modules associated with more particular aspects of research such as the theories and methods of digital social research.
For me, the stronger focus on actually how to go about doing research was a part of the course I really enjoyed, with all of it culminating with my final dissertation. This was a great chance to explore something I was interested in, whilst applying all the knowledge acquired throughout the year. The course definitely equipped me with skills that I use day-to-day now.
Supportive staff and personal tutor
I found all the teaching staff to be extremely supportive and they were always available to have a chat or to reach out to with follow up questions. The personal tutor system in place at Stirling was a key pillar of support during my time on the course. Being able to have a dedicated tutor who I could go to regarding academic queries but also more pastoral issues, helped me stay on track with the course and think about my future plans.
Beautiful campus environment
I think that if you ask almost anyone who’s studied at Stirling, the beautiful campus would probably be high up on the list of things they enjoyed! The campus environment is so peaceful, and the beautiful views out to the loch from the library definitely made those longer study days a little bit easier.
During my time at Stirling I really enjoyed working in different services across the University including the Careers Service and the Student Services Hub. I really valued being able to give back to the student community through these roles.
Great preparation for work and further study
Completing my MSc in Applied Social Research has definitely propelled me to be in the position where I am now. It opened up doors to my current role in a research consultancy where I do practical research in the form of impact evaluations, to help various initiatives and services understand and evidence the difference they are making in the communities they serve.
Alongside this, I was able to secure a funded place at the University of Stirling where I am currently undertaking my PhD. I apply lots of the skills I was able to hone during my degree on a daily basis. I definitely wouldn’t be in this position had I not completed the course. If you asked me at the beginning of my Masters if I thought this is where I would end up I probably wouldn’t believe that it would be possible!
One piece of advice
There’s so much more to Stirling than just your course, make use of the different services available (e.g. the Careers Service) and other activities put on. Along the same lines, I would also say that, especially as a full-time Masters student, one-year isn’t a huge amount of time and it will absolutely fly by! Try your best to get involved with things beyond your modules, as it will help provide you with experiences to draw on that will help set you apart in job applications and interviews.
