Why Project Management is one of the most in-demand skills worldwide: Our expert’s insight

Organisations of all sizes need to adapt to the demands of the modern business landscape. Project Management has become one of the world’s fastest‑growing professional fields.

Companies are navigating diverse challenges every day. They require qualified experts to help them deal with:

  • the technological disruption of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • meeting sustainability goals
  • supply chain pressures
  • regulatory compliance

Project Managers provide the key skills businesses need by balancing the day-to-day details of a project against the big picture goals that now define success.

The landscape of Project Management is evolving. It is essential to choose the best possible training to prepare for a career as a Project Manager.

The changing landscape of Project Management

The Project Management Institute estimates that by 2030, 2.3 million people will be needed every year to fill project‑oriented roles. These roles exist in all industries including:

  • technical industries
  • healthcare
  • construction
  • energy
  • finance
  • third sector

But Project Managers today must do more than coordinate timelines and balance budgets. The role now demands an increased level of strategic leadership to help businesses meet the measures of project success.

  • Is a project resilient to unpredictable global events or cybersecurity threats?
  • Does it achieve data privacy standards?
  • What are the sustainability implications of the project?

All these questions and more are now considerations for the modern Project Manager.

Against this backdrop of change, we spoke with Dr Ama Lawani, Director of our new MSc Project Management course. We explore the value of studying Project Management at university and the changing role of Project Managers in the workplace:

AI is becoming more powerful all the time - are Project Management skills still relevant?

Yes, Project Management skills are still very relevant and in-demand.

One of the biggest anxieties for many is the rise of automation. Dr Lawani stresses that human intuition is more important than ever before. "AI is increasingly automating functions such as scheduling, reporting, and data analysis. The result is that the value of human capabilities becomes even more important. Graduates of our Project Management course develop key skills to guide organisational change:

  • strategic thinking
  • leadership
  • stakeholder engagement
  • critical decision-making

They can interpret complex project contexts and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders."

"AI enhances project management tools. Stirling graduates provide the leadership, judgement, ethical oversight, and stakeholder engagement to ensure projects deliver real value."

What is the value in doing a Masters in Project Management over a certification like PRINCE2?

Project Managers looking to upskill have various different options. A Masters in Project Management gives graduates an advantage over the other qualifications. We asked Dr Lawani to explain what the advantages of a degree are.

"Certifications such as PRINCE2 offer knowledge of structured project management methodologies. They are primarily focused on specific frameworks and procedural guidance for managing projects. In contrast, our MSc Project Management offers a broader and deeper academic foundation to the subject. We integrate theory, research, and critical analysis with practical application."

"The course also develops strong research and analytical capabilities. Graduates will be able to evaluate emerging trends, technologies, and global challenges. As a result, the MSc provides a long-term competitive advantage over other certifications. As well as managing projects effectively, graduates will also be well equipped to progress into:

  • senior leadership
  • programme management
  • strategic roles in an increasingly complex global environment"

What skills are most in demand in Project Management - and how does our course meet industry demand?

"The MSc is designed to address industry-identified skills gaps. It combines strong theoretical foundations with practical application. The course emphasises the capabilities that employers are looking for in project professionals:

  • project leadership
  • stakeholder management
  • project planning
  • communication
  • change management"

"It aims to develop graduates who can manage uncertainty, lead diverse teams, and deliver value in complex organisational environments. By strengthening both technical and human-centred competencies, the course prepares students to meet the evolving demands of modern project management roles."

What does a Project Manager do today that perhaps wasn't part of the job in the past?

The rise of AI technology and automation is having a big impact on the role of the Project Manager. They need to be able to leverage these new tools while leading businesses through change. Additionally there has been a huge growth in the number of companies operating on a global scale. This in turn has led to a demand for Project Managers who can facilitate this. It is an exciting time to gain valuable project management competencies that will allow them to advance in any project‑related role.

Dr Lawani explains that "although project management has traditionally focused on delivering projects on time, within scope, and within budget, the role is now evolving into a more strategic function that drives organisational and societal change. Modern projects are often linked to broader goals such as:

  • sustainability
  • digital transformation
  • innovation.

"Project outcomes need to be aligned with long-term organisational and global priorities."

"Project managers are now expected to act as strategic leaders and change agents. They need to coordinate diverse stakeholders, integrate emerging technologies, and ensure projects create lasting value. This includes supporting initiatives related to sustainable development, responsible governance, and digital transformation."

Where do you think students from our MSc Project Management will be five years after graduating?

Managing some of the most exciting and complex projects in the world is the future awaiting graduates. They'll be in demand across many industries and in many countries. Graduates from Stirling will be leading businesses through transformations on many scales.

Dr Lawani explained that there are many opportunities and challenges awaiting our graduates. She highlighted the wide range of paths they may pursue, noting that University of Stirling project management graduates are well‑placed to take on diverse roles. In the coming years, they may find themselves leading charity events and educational projects, and some may go on to contribute to larger‑scale initiatives addressing complex global challenges, including:

  • digital transformation initiatives
  • implementation of sustainable infrastructure
  • renewable energy projects.

Dr Lawani adds: "Beyond technical delivery, graduates will increasingly contribute to solving global challenges. They'll support organisations in achieving sustainability targets and managing technology-driven organisational change. They'll be coordinating multinational programmes that respond to economic, environmental, and societal pressures. In these roles, they'll act as strategic leaders who translate complex global challenges into actionable, value-driven projects."
