Support Stirling through a gift in your will
Leaving a gift in your will to the University of Stirling is a lasting way to support future students. Your gift could fund scholarships, support those in financial need or help to advance important research.
Gifts can take many forms—whether a specific item, a cash amount, or the residue of your estate. Leaving a gift to the University, after providing for family and friends, is one of the highest honours we can receive.
We understand your loved ones come first. Whatever the size, a gift in your will can help shape the future and make a lasting difference. We encourage you to speak to your family, friends or solicitor when making your decision. Every gift is personal, and your solicitor will guide you through the process.
You’re also welcome to contact the University’s Development and Alumni Relations team if you’d like to talk through your intentions or find out more. The University of Stirling is an exempt charity, so any gift left to us in your will is free from Inheritance Tax in the UK. Our Scottish charity number is SC011159.
Inheritance Tax: the basics
The standard rate of Inheritance Tax (IHT) is 40%, and it is charged on the value of an estate above the threshold of £325,000. No IHT is due if you leave everything to your spouse or civil partner, a registered charity, or a community amateur sports club.
If you leave your main home to your children or grandchildren (including stepchildren, adopted or foster children), your threshold may increase to £500,000. If you’re married or in a civil partnership and your estate is worth less than your threshold, any unused threshold can be added to your partner’s threshold. Find out more about Inheritance Tax.
Thank you for considering a gift to the University of Stirling
If you are planning to leave a gift in your will, we’d be grateful if you would let us know. We would welcome the opportunity to thank you personally and to keep you updated on the difference your support could make.
