16 University of Stirling athletes confirmed for Glasgow 2026
Major representation at this summer's Commonwealth Games
At least 16 swimmers and two coaches from the University of Stirling – Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence – will compete at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Twelve Stirling swimmers will represent Scotland at the Friendly Games, it has been announced today, with two selected for England and one each for Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.
And with selections ongoing, more athletes from the University could be added in the coming weeks – with the potential to surpass the record 20 sportsmen and women who competed at Birmingham 2022. That would be a significant achievement given this year’s Games has been scaled back to 10 sports.
Duncan Scott OBE and Angharad Evans were announced earlier this year as pre-selections for Team Scotland, while para swimmers Sam Downie and Ollie Carter were confirmed last month. It has now been confirmed that the four will be joined by Evie Davis, Dean Fearn, Lucy Grieve, Lucy Hope, Keanna MacInnes, Holly McGill, Katie Shanahan and George Smith.
The Scotland swim team will be led by the University’s Head Performance Coach Ben Higson, supported by colleague Bradley Hay, Stirling’s High-Performance Coach.
Olympic champions Tom Dean, Freya Anderson (both England) and Jack McMillan (Northern Ireland) have also been selected for their respective countries, as has Peter Allen (Isle of Man) – meaning the University currently has 16 swimmers from four countries bound for Glasgow.
Commonwealth Games swimmer, University of Stirling
I’m absolutely delighted to be picked for my second Commonwealth Games. I’ve got a lot of family and friends coming to watch and it’s literally down the road from where I live so it just makes it even more special.
Katie Shanahan, who won bronze in the 400m Individual Medley and 200m Backstroke at Birmingham 2022, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be picked for my second Commonwealth Games. I’ve got a lot of family and friends coming to watch and it’s literally down the road from where I live so it just makes it even more special. It’s not long now with the final preparations and competitions coming up and the excitement is definitely building.
“Competing for Team Scotland is just so different, it only happens once every four years and there’s a different energy about it all. It’s different in a very good way and I’m looking forward to getting back in that environment in the prep camp and then in Glasgow. I just can’t wait to compete.”
Also competing for Scotland in Glasgow is University of Stirling student Evan Jones, who trains at Manchester Performance Centre.
Following the Commonwealth Games, eight Stirling swimmers will make the journey to Paris to compete for Great Britain at the European Aquatics Championships, with Freya Anderson, Evie Davis, Tom Dean, Angharad Evans, Keanna MacInnes, Jack McMillan, Duncan Scott and Katie Shanahan selected.
