Dr Mark Donoghue

About me

As a Technical Specialist in Cognition at the University of Stirling’s School of Psychology, I provide specialist technical expertise that supports research and teaching in perception, motion science, and digital health. My work spans 3D computer graphics, virtual reality, optical motion tracking, game engine programming, and 3D printing, with a particular focus on developing technologies that enable new approaches to psychological research.

My primary area of technical practice is 3D computer graphics and game engine programming. Immersive technologies are increasingly valuable in psychology research because they can generate controlled, synthetic stimuli while helping to bridge the gap between laboratory-based and real-world environments. I have developed virtual reality applications for experiments investigating visual search and generated synthetic landscapes for training AI models to make perceptual judgements.

I also integrate real-time graphics and game engine technologies with optical motion tracking to support research into the cognition of human motion. This has involved developing systems that track participant behaviour and generate experimental stimuli in real time, as well as integrating data collection with mobile EEG. These systems enable researchers to investigate behaviour and brain activity within dynamic, interactive experimental environments.

Alongside my work in real-time computer graphics and motion tracking, I provide technical support in the design and manufacture of 3D-printed research materials and equipment. I have designed and produced 3D-printed experimental stimuli for studies investigating gripping posture and visual search, as well as bespoke equipment including motion-tracking markers and mounts for optical equipment.

Across these areas, my role is to translate research requirements into practical technical solutions, combining software development, digital fabrication, and experimental technology to support innovative research and teaching in psychology.
