Dr Jennifer Dickie

About me

I am an Associate Professor in Environmental Geography, specialising in energy geographies, at the University of Stirling. I am the Deputy Director of the “Integrated Systems Approaches for Accelerating a Just Transition (JUST-Systems)” research programme, funded as part of the UKRI’s ‘Building a green future’ strategic theme. I also co-lead the Scottish Research Alliance for Energy, Homes and Livelihoods ‘Decarbonising Heat’ theme. As an inter-disciplinary researcher, my work focuses on understanding the inextricable links between energy, society and climate change. My research explores perceptions and attitudes towards energy infrastructure and policies, energy justice, and how and why publics engage (or don’t) with different aspects of the energy system and decision-making. I specialise in using geo and socio-spatial data and mixed method approaches in my research, including participatory and creative approaches.

I would be keen to supervise students on a range of topics that take interdisciplinary approaches to better our understanding and support a just transition to a low carbon future. The geographical focus of my research is currently South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK. I am particularly interested in supervising projects on the following topics:

  • Socio-technical assemblages of renewable and sub-surface energy systems
  • Issues of energy access, poverty and justice
  • The role of biogas in supporting sustainable livelihoods
  • The water-energy-food-health nexus
  • Exploring energy futures through innovative and participatory research methods.
