Abstract
The introduction introduces the central questions of this research endeavour, giving the background and context to the iterative research process that has included a workshop, research conversations, and drafts in progress. The introduction outlines the main limitations to resilience discourse and assesses the literature published to date that engages, more and less critically, with that prevailing discourse. Then, it outlines the four thematic areas of engagement that make up the volume’s sections. These are, broadly speaking, how critical vocabulary for contemporary scholarship on crisis must move beyond: the imperative to bounce back quickly, the neglect of collective, land-based knowledge, the insistence on hyper-individualism, and the depoliticised reduction of subjects living with crisis to compliance and victimhood. Lastly, the introduction summarises the multilingual and interdisciplinary approach.
