Abstract
In 1969, Fr Anthony Ross, OP, the distinguished Dominican scholar of medieval and early modern Scotland, published a substantial article in this journal on the libraries of the Scottish Dominican houses which, although it has been subject to occasional corrections, has remained the standard work on the subject. This article revisits, expands, and transforms Ross’s scholarship, building on recent discoveries and subsequent developments in book history to present a new window onto the pre-Reformation library of the Dominican house in Edinburgh with important implications for how we think more broadly about the libraries of Scottish religious houses in general.
