Abstract
Extended reality (XR) technologies are reshaping storytelling by extending narrative environments beyond traditional screens into audiences' physical surroundings. Recent augmented reality (AR) applications for storytelling allow audiences to experience cues that are synchronized with film narratives. Despite rapid technological progress, the theoretical understanding of how environmental augmentation enhances immersion remains underdeveloped. This conceptual paper presents a framework that explains immersive storytelling through psychological mechanisms. It proposes that AR-enhanced environmental synchronization drives perceptual realism, cognitive, and emotional responses both individually and collectively through AR stimuli. This collective response synchrony is hypothesized to produce an audience effect, enabling emotional engagement with narratives alongside film characters and fellow viewers, thereby deepening narrative immersion. Drawing on narrative transportation theory and the concept of collective effervescence, this paper argues that AR storytelling serves not only as a tool for sensory enhancement but also as a means of fostering collective experiences. The proposed framework offers a theoretical foundation for designing AR-enhanced cinematic content and identifies directions for empirical validation.
