Abstract
Brodie Paterson and colleagues consider the concept of 'zero tolerance' and its adoption by the NHS in England as a means of combating violence by service users towards mental health nurses. The authors describe the zero tolerance campaign as a failure, and consider the reasons why and the lessons learnt.
