Abstract
Effective use of interpreting and translation services is central to providing safe, patient-centered care for individuals who speak languages other than English (LOTE). However, such services are underutilised: there is a culture of getting by with more basic communication, or use of informal interpreters like family members or bilingual staff, as well as inconsistency in the provision of services. Inadequate interpreting can lead to misunderstandings, compromised consent, and poorer health outcomes. Staff must be adequately trained and given clear protocols for arranging and delivering care with an interpreter as part of the clinical team. This chapter looks at the importance of good communication, and provides practical guidance for clinicians on how to work effectively with interpreters, including preparation, documentation, communication, confidentiality, and feedback. Placing linguistic needs on par with other clinical considerations underscores the importance of communication in the patient encounter, to build trust and improve patient outcomes, regardless of English language skills.
